Orion was commissioned by the Cultural Olympiad 2001-2004.

Since its world premiere performance at the Acropolis in Athens, Greece , Orion, a new work by Philip Glass (commissioned by the 2004 Athens Cultural Olympiad) will make its West Coast premiere as the centerpiece of the 2005 Eclectic Orange Festival. In collaboration with a group of renowned composers and performers from around the world, the evening-length work is intended to reflect the international character of the Olympiad itself.
