| 2010-2011 CALENDAR OF EVENTS Bayanihan Philippine Dance Company The exotic rhythms and brilliant colors of traditional Filipino dance and dress will thrill Orange County audiences as the Bayanihan Philippine National Dance Company returns after their sold-out performance during the Society’s opening season at the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall in 2006. As the first Filipino group to perform on Broadway, Bayanihan also has the distinction of being the first non-American dance company to take to the stage at New York’s Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, as well as the first Philippine cultural group to perform in Russia, the People’s Republic of China and South America.
What Makes Music Beautiful? The Society begins the sixth season of the What Makes Music Beautiful? lecture series with guest speaker and pianist Leon Fleisher. Fleisher last performed in Orange County alongside the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra in 2006. Includes wine tasting.

JapanOC Presenting sponsor: South Coast Plaza The West Coast Festival begins with a mesmerizing performance of modern Japanese dance by the exciting Butoh troupe Sankai Juku. Performing in white-body makeup and accompanied by music and sound effects, Sankai Juku dancers will use slow hyper-controlled motion to display playful imagery. Funded in part by the National Dance Project of the New England Foundation for the Arts, with lead funding from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and additional funding from the Ford Foundation, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and the Community Connections Fund of the MetLife Foundation.

Mutter-Bashmet-Harrell Trio Elizabeth and Henry Segerstrom Select Series The Mutter-Bashmet-Harrell Trio, comprised of the top classical soloists in the world – the acclaimed violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter, the pre-eminent viola player Yuri Bashmet, and cello virtuoso Lynn Harrell – will delight audiences for an all-Beethoven program. Lynn Harrell was the principal artist during last year’s Laguna Beach Music Festival.

JapanOC Japanese guitarist Kazumi Watanabe comes to Orange County to introduce works by the late composer Toru Takemitsu, renowned for his avant-garde work and who was “the first Japanese composer fully recognized in the west.”
What Makes Music Beautiful? The special “Liszt Birthday Celebration” begins with the second installment of the What Makes Music Beautiful? lecture series with guest lecturer, Dr. Alan Walker, musicologist and celebrated biographer of Franz Liszt. Dr. Walker will be discussing the piano music of Franz Liszt. Includes wine tasting.

Baroque Festival Donna L. Kendall Classical Series Les Violons du Roy returns for a Baroque Festival featuring tenor Ian Bostridge, who has not been back in Orange County since his performance in the Eclectic Orange Festival in 2000. Led by conductor Bernard Labadie, the program will include arias from Baroque era operas and orchestral music of Handel and Gemimiani.
